Trucking factors are important

Kinja'd!!!3 Kinja'd!!! 13

Today was the day. It was time to explain the truth behind the mystery of why the front left wheel of our Massey Ferguson 65 tractor appeared to be falling off...

Kinja'd!!!

The truth is... because it was. And this wasn’t trivial. Because that wheel rim is filled with cement. And I think it weighs more than I do...

Kinja'd!!!

It turned out that the original split pin in front of   the castellated nut that holds this entire catastrophe together was a smidge too...small. So the nut walked out. If anyone here has done their own trailer bearings then you might have an inkling of how daft this could go...

This was compounded by the fact that the spindle upon which this mass rotated was, as I found out, held in b y a combination of mass, gravity and luck...

Kinja'd!!!

See that gap above the hub...that isn’t supposed to be there. Nor is that view of the nut at the top end of the spindle (it shouldn’t be that polished!). You should be looking at a bolt head.

Kinja'd!!!

This is much better. It would’ve been even better if I’d had the right socket for the wheel nuts and picked the right setting for the castellated nut in the first instance (as in this photo) rather than the second time around...

And the less I tell you about the fucking language involved in getting that fucking tank of a fucking wheel on that fucking hub...the fucking better for all of us.

And it gets even better. The wheel still wobbles.

Doesn’t that extra weight keep the front down when plough ing? Love tracker posts, keeps Oppo spicy !

You know that moment when you think you are about to end up under something you are pretty sure you won't be able to lift off yourself? I had that moment...

As someone who has wheelied a tractor like this before...yes. Are cement filled wheels the solution? Maybe...but there are more practical options.

Hence the swearing...fear is a magnificent motivator to go all Billy Connolly about things.

Rotational weight can have advantages being placed elsewhere doesn’t afford.

Mass, gravity and luck. I installed a door a few weeks ago and had to wrestle it up some stairs by myself. I will claim to be a stout individual, but it was close.

Does it wobble any less? And concrete-filled tire rim? Brilliant! But the driver seat is probably in the middle, as opposed to the passenger side...

Great job not getting killed by a wheel!

Speaking of Massey’s, a buddy of mine put EFI on his Massey Ferguson Ski Whiz snowmobile. It even has remote start !

my suggestion: find some wheels that aren’t cement filled (since it’s not 4WD you should just be able to match bolt pattern and offset) and invest in some suitcase weights and a hanger.

They are already on my parts list! There’s a local mob that supply replacement wheels for this tractor so getting them is easy. When I need to replace the wheel bearings I'll just do the lot - spindle, hub, bearings and wheel

The hanger will have to be made but weights are not an issue. To be honest, I don't think it really needs counterweights at all but the capacity for them can't hurt.

The previous job to this was fitting a couple of large timber doors filled with 6mm double glazing...so I know about their weight too!

The wheel wobbles much less. I suspect that there’s some wear on the hub and/or the outer bearing as it has small amount of play despite the fact it’s done up as tight as it can go...
